After his father died, his mother came to Texas on the "Hanover" and arrived in New Orleans, 23 April 1880. They traveled with mother's parents parents, Johann Christof Friedrich Schulz and Helene "Sophie" Elisabeth Johanne (Schmaler) Schulz.

He married Bertha E. Schulz, 23 November 1905 in Burton, Washington Co., Texas. He was a farmer. They were the parents of 10 children: John Godford, Frieda Emma, Emma Elizabeth, Bertha H., Edna, Ella Marie, Edwin Herman, Alma Caroline, Sophie Lena and Mary Elornia Beckman.
