He was a member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church and a member of the South Knoxville Masonic Lodge #769 for over 50 years. He was also a WWII veteran who served in the Pacific Theatre with the 836th Engineering Battalion Company C.
Mr. Avans retired from KUB Water Dept. after 39 years. He also worked for his good friends Herbert and Jeannine at McLemore Florist for more than 20 years. He was a former president of the South High School Boosters Club as well.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Willis Avans and Mettie Hansard.
Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Ruby Avans; 4 sons and daughters-in-law: Craig and Suzanne Laman, Dave and Linda Avans, Virgil and Brenda Avans, and Darryl and Carol Avans; daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Gerald Fender; grandchildren: Brad and Lori Laman, Tom and Joy Mann, Jenni and Barry Combs, Jay Avans, Brad and Hope Avans, Chris and Kimberly Avans, Dillon Avans and Cody Avans; 5 step grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Mary Ruth Hansard; sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Goldie Mason; as well as one nephew, several cousins, and many special friends.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hillcrest United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Hillcrest United Methodist Church from 6-8pm. A funeral service will follow at 8pm with Rev. Gerald Fender and Rev. Pat Polis officiating and a Masonic service with Lodge 769. Family and friends will meet at Woodlawn Cemetery on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 1pm for a graveside service with military honors. Condolences may be offered at www.berryfuneralhome.net
