Son of Benjamin & Rebecca (Larrimore) Pettit married Sarah "Sally" Donahue 9 Feb 1806 St. Genevive Co, MO.

James deserted his family in MO abt 1828 removing to Cherokee East Nation (TN) taking Elizabeth Hilderbrand has his wife.

James "Jim" committed suicide on the site of his Fort Marr and stockade. He was found in the kitchen of his log house with a large hole blown into his forehead right between his eyes.

Note: My 3rd great grandfather, James Pettit, was a bigamist. He left his first family in MO, moved back east to the Cherokee lands that were gradually being opened to settlement, and had another family. It is clear that most of his wealth came from the holdings of his second wife,
Elizabeth Hildebrand, a Cherokee Indian. JAMES killed himself in 1842,after their union as man & wife became dissolved according to the laws and usage of the said Cherokee Nation, having on hand about twelve thousand dollars in gold and silver and a large number of Negroes and
lands.

BURIAL INFO: Outside of what was once known as Pettit Cem near Conasauga. He is buried near a Chestnut tree under a rock pile, beside one of his slaves. He is buried just off the outer edge of the family plot.It was against the custom in those days to inter a suicide upon consecrated ground. He is buried about 1000 ft southwest of the road toward the L&N underpass. His remains rest there today.
