OBITUARY:
Graveside services for Walter Wallis Baker, 66, of Cadiz, were conducted on Aug. 11, 2002, at Dry Fork Cemetery in Lyon County. Goodwin Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. The Rev. Kinnith Morris officiated the services. Burial followed in the Cemetery.
Mr. Baker died on Aug. 6, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, Maine, of natural causes.
Mr. Baker was born Oct. 14, 1935, in Trigg County. He was the son of the late Clyde E. and Edna Wallis Baker.
Mr. Baker was a retired owner of Baker Accounting Service. He actively helped develop the Trail of Tears Commemorative Park and helped up the annual Indian Pow-Wow for 10-years, creating one of the top Native American events in the southeast and a major support financially of the park. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army with service during the Korean conflict, and he was a member of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Louise Baker.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Tash Baker, of Cadiz; his sons, Richard Baker of Brentwood, Tenn., and Andrew C. Baker of Gracey; a daughter, Christina White of Fredericksburg, Va.; a brother Joe Ricks Baker of Whiteland, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Gordon (Betty) Gray of Hopkinsville; stepchildren, K. Jay Nave of Bon Aqua, Tenn.; George Nave of Pembroke and Tasha Nave Mhabubi, of Pembroke; nine grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were: James Robert Lawrence, Gant Golladay, Lorenzo Johnson, John W. McPherson Jr., Raymond Perry and Robert E. Francis. Honorary pallbearers were Gene Drennan, Eric Harrison, Hillard Ezell and Charles Turnley.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Trail of Tears Museum Building Fund, P.O. Box 611, Hopkinsville, KY 42241, or St. Joseph Hospital, 360 Broadway, Bangor, ME, 04401.
