Joshua was sea captain for several years; while in the merchant service he visited all parts of the civilized world. Eventually deciding to remain on shore, he entered the lumber business in Sanford, shipping lumber from there to Boston, and followed that occupation for several years. He was in charge of a brick yard in Sanford, and, later at Cambridge Massachusetts.
He subsequently served as sheriff of York County.
On 9 July 1839 a commission was dated for his service as Captain in the state militia, Third Regiment, Third Brigade, First Division.
In the fall of 1839 Captain Joshua Littlefield began to work at shoemaking at ‘The Corner' in Sanford, and continued at this occupation during the winters for more than forty years.
On 6 September 1840 Joshua was received into the Sanford Church.
On 20 August 1846 he was appointed sergeant of Company C. First Regiment of of Volunteers, raised in the state of Maine for the prosecution of the war between the United States and the Republic of Mexico.
On 9 December 1847 he was excommunicated from the Sanford Church.
During the 1850's Joshua resided on Lebanon Street in Sanford.
On 5 May 1890 his shoe shop at The Corner caught fire from a defective chimney, and was burned to the ground.
There was no insurance.
