Funeral is Held Here For Former Local Resident

Funeral services for a former Rockdale resident, Mrs. Lillian Marshall Perry, were held here Sunday at 2 p.m. from Phillips and Luckey chapel.

The Rev., H. R. Yount of the Second Baptist church at Houston officiated and burial was made in the family plot at the Old City Cemetery.

Mrs. Perry died early Friday morning at the home of her son where she lived. The body was received in Rockdale that afternoon .

Before going to Houston to reside more than forty years ago, Mrs. Perry resided in Rockdale, and her numerous friends here through the years had always been glad to welcome her on return visits. Since the death of her brother, W. Hill Marshall, in 1944, she had not been here.

During the years lived here she was an active member of First Baptist church, and in Houston she had her membership with Second Baptist church. Sunday the Rev. H. R. Yount, assistant pastor of the church, spoke of her as a woman with "Christian faith and a mighty energy."

Mrs. Perry was a native of Richmond, Texas, born August 4, 1862. Her father J. P. Marshall who taught school in Richmond is said to have received the first public school-teachers' certificate to be awarded in the state. It was given him on July 10, 1871. His uncle, Kinchen Davis, was one of 35 Texans who were released at Meir, Mexico, following the famous drawing of black and white beans on Feb. 11. 1843. Those Texans drawing black beans were executed by Santa Anna's men. Davis and 34 others drew white beans and were released.

Mrs. Perry leaves a son Richard M. Perry of Houston and a number of nieces and nephews. Those who served as casket attendants were: J. I. Rivet, Tom L. Hiner, R. C. Howard, J. Q. Baldridge, K. K. Hairston all of Houston and Emerson Marshall of Rockdale.
