28 Dec 1972, Chronicle Telegram, Elyria. Grafton Man Is Fatally Injured in I-71 Accident.
MEDINA--A Grafton man was killed early today when the trailer rig he was driving struck a disabled tractor-trailer, swerved across the road into the center median, and struck a concrete pillar bridge on Interstate 71 just south east of the Medina city limits. Richard Kokensparger, 43, of 1045 Chestnut st., was dead at the scene of the accident, according to the Medina Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol. Kokensparger, father of four sons, had left the Grafton home yesterday evening so he could get to his job at Shippers Dispatch, Inc., of Cleveland at 11:30pm, according to his wife.
According to reports, his rig was southbound on I-71 when it left the pavement, shortly after 2am, striking a disabled rig on the right hand berm of the road. When Kokensparger brought his rig back onto the highway it continued across the southbound lanes, crashing through the guardrail on the left side of the road. His rig continued on into the median and down an embankment before striking a bridge pillar over Rt. 162. Kokensparger's trailer was demolished.
Services for Kokensparger will be Saturday at 1:30pm in the Russell D. Fulton funeral home, Grafton. The Rev. Clarence Neth will officiate and burial will be in Nesbett cemetery. Born in Zanesville, he lived in Grafton 18 years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and had previously driven for Pick-N-Pay Super Markets. He was a member of the Columbia United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Dora; four sons, Karl, Roy, Ralph and Max, all at home; a brother, John, Brunswick, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Kokensparger, Zanesville.
