HELEN BUTLER JOHNSTON
June 16, 1925 ~ December 22, 2010
and
RAYMOND JOHNSTON
February 21, 1925 - December 28, 2010

Helen was born June 16, 1925, on a farm in Clearfield, PA to William and Elsie Butler. She died December 22, 2010, at age 85. Raymond was born February 21, 1925, in Clearfield, PA to James and Jane Johnston. He died six days after Helen on December 28, 2010, also at age 85.
Raymond served on Guadalcanal late in WW II as a sergeant with the 457th Amphibian Truck Co.
He and Helen married in 1946 and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on December 6. In 1956, they moved their young family across the country to Vancouver.
Raymond worked for Portco Corp. for 22 years. He also remodeled several rental homes and built two new homes for his family. In 1980, he started his own machine shop, retiring in 1989.
Helen was the youngest of eight children and worked as a seamstress until her marriage to Raymond. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother whose family meant everything to her. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, baking and playing Scrabble with friends. She also helped Raymond with all the remodeling projects. The family spent many summer weekends camping, fishing and enjoying the outdoors.
In later years, Raymond and Helen traveled the United States extensively, often attending Army reunions and visiting family in PA.
Raymond and Helen are survived by their four children, Paul (Pam) of Brush Prairie, WA, Carol (Michael Roberts) and Diana, all of Vancouver, and Janet Alder (Dan) of Washougal. They are also survived by their three granddaughters, Sheri Johnston of Denver, CO and Danielle and Shae Alder of Washougal. Raymond is survived by two sisters, Alma Johnston of Florida and Louise Keevish of Vancouver. Helen is survived by one sister, Sylvia Eadie of New York; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Kaiser Hospice and the staff at Parkside Adult Family Home for the loving care they provided to our parents and for their genuine concern for the family.
A service was held at Willamette National Cemetery on Friday, January 14, 2011, with full military honors for Raymond's years of service to his country.
