Elijah Rowlee had an accident that involved a horse in Corning, New York and was taken to his home, from which he died. He resided on the north side of the river from Corning at the hamlet of Knoxville. See the 1873 atlas for location. Knoxville no longer exists and is now part of Corning. Elijah and Asenath were enumerated there in the 1865 New York State census, He was likely buried in the Knoxville Cemetery near his residence, also known as Pritchard Cemetery or he was taken 1.6 miles west to the High Street Cemetery in Painted Post where his wife's mother has a memorial and who predeceased Elijah. Unaware of the location of his death a modern miltiary memorial was erected at the Wright Cemetery in Deckerville, Sanilac County, Michigan where his wife, Asenath soon removed to after his death. The memorial is incorrectly inscribed with February 16, 1867 for a date of death. The Corning newspaper article is from February 14, 1867 and it indicates he "died yesterday."
