Suggested edit: Mr. James Charles "Jake" Elrod, age 86, of Coleman, passed away at the Coleman County Medical Center, October 6, 2004.
He was born July 7, 1918, in Coahoma, Texas, to Eva Mae and John Raymond Elrod.
He joined the United States Army on November 1, 1940, and entered active service on November 25, 1940. During his tour of duty, he served alongside his brother in the European Theatre, seeing action in Italy, France, and Africa. He was in the first wave of troops at Normandy Beach. During his service, he received two Bronze Battle Stars and numerous other awards and commendations. After receiving an honorable discharge in June of 1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served until March of 1948. After his honorable discharge rom the Navy, Jake resided in California and Texas, settling in Abilene, in 1972.
In 1981, he moved to Coleman. He recently moved back to Coleman after living in Brownwood for several years.
During his life Jake owned restaurants, car dealerships, and was a paint contractor. He loved gardening, ranching, fishing, and beekeeping.
He is survived by his wife Joyce of Coleman; 2 daughters - Delores Bottegal of Colorado and Donna and husband Allen Beadel of Ft. Worth; 2 sons - Jim and wife Brenda Elrod of Granbury and John and wife Lisa Elrod of Keller; brother Odell Elrod of Arizona; step- son and wife Dewayne and Luanna Saverance of Coleman; and daughter and husband Marsha and Kenneth Bean of Clyde, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, and three brothers.
Funeral services were at the Walker Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Patrick Bennett officiating.
