George was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1914, the only child of Oscar and Alice Forgard. The family moved to Salem when he was very young, and he has been a resident here all of his life with the exception of his Army service. He served during WWII, in which he was stationed in both the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and also served in the National Guard. After graduating from Capitol Business School, he was employed for several years as secretary to the Division Manager of PGE in Salem. He earned a BA and MA in Education from Oregon College of Education and Stanford University, respectively, and was an elementary principal and teacher in the Salem Public Schools for 27 years. His love of life and learning continued throughout his life through reading, Elderhostel, video courses, and travel. Even in his 90's he continued to enjoy sports, gardening, canning, landscaping, playing the piano, and attending concerts and community events. He was a volunteer for several years at the Union Gospel Mission, Meals on Wheels, and music ministries at his church.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Florence Fuller Forgard; children, Georgia Larson and husband Dwight of Newberg, David Forgard and wife Susan of Roseburg, and John Forgard of Salem; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 24 at Salem First Baptist Church. Memorials in his honor may be given to The Heritage Foundation at www.askheritage.org. Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home.
