The Rev. James Danelly Anthony served the congregation of the Sandersville Methodist Episcopal Church twice, but is best remembered as the Civil War pastor who ministered to the entire town through this conflict. His encounter with General Sherman in November of 1864 during the infamous March to the Sea is documented in his autobiography, Life and Times of Rev. J.D. Anthony: An Autobiography with a Few Original Sermons. An historical marker stands in the Old City Cemetery in Sandersville next to the Anthony gravesite.

J.D. Anthony during his 19 years as a presiding elder was know as "The Bishop of the Wiregrass" in whose meetings 30,000 were said to have been converted.

James D. Anthony was married to Emily Baugh, of Lawrenceville, on 25 Nov 1847 in Gwinnett County, Georgia. They were the parents of:

Emily Anthony died 18 May 1867 at the age of forty. Rev. Anthony married a second time 30 Sep 1867 to Miss Elizabeth Josephine Alexander, daughter of Thomas W. and Rebecca A. Alexander. She was a niece of his first wife.

Josephine Anthony died 7 Feb 1890. Rev. Anthony married a third time 21 Jul 1890 to Mrs. Mary Anna Biggers Wiggins, widow of Rev. L. G. R. Wiggins. Anna and her first husband were the parents of Olin Wiggins, Mrs. H.M. Snell, L.L. Wiggins, and Theophalus Wiggins.
