Addie Johnson Rhoads (Kathy's great-grandmother) wrote The following information. Ezell his wife Tildy and 3 Children lived in Mc Kinny Texas, and that Ezell was charged with murder and sentenced to be hanged. His sister Adaline Stepp Jones, her husband William Lee Jones, and Williams Sister Mattie or his daughter Mattie went with a child named Charley, so I think the event must have taken place after 1915.(See note below.) But I am not sure. The story goes that they all traveled down to Texas from Blackstone,Oklahoma(to date I can find no Blackstone, Oklahoma) To see if they could get Ezell Stepp Released from Jail. They discussed escape, but that was impossible. After Ezell Was hanged, Tildy and her three children Moved to Duncan Oklahom. You know how storys can change with time.....1900 Census Tennesee Bledsoe Co. (film # 1241558) has Ezell Stepp his wife Tildia, daughter Jewel, son Garland. Ezell Stepp - for killing Hardy Mills, in 1921. November 17, 1922 Ezell Stepp, hanged for the murder of Hardy Mills, was the last man to be legally executed in Collin County. He was hanged from gallows constructed beside the Collin County Prison....[This was one of the last county hangings in the state before the state started doing them in 1922.]

Mr.Stepp is a distant cousin of my grandfather, John Bates, and in my teens he used to tell me the story of Ezell Stepp and how he was hanged for killing his cousin Hardy Mills. However, many years later, on his brother's deathbed, his brother confessed that he had been the one to kill Hardy Mills. I believe Mr. Mills was found in a well, but I could be remembering wrong. I would just like to know if the record has been set straight and Ezell Stepp's memory has been cleared of the murder.

My Name is Katherine Bates Lindenmeier. Ezell Stepp is my Great Grand Uncle. I have never heard the story related by John Bates (also wondering if John could be a relative) also I have a statement that I believe was in a newspaper of the time that would suggest that a brother wasn't involved. "Arlie Stepp testified against his uncle at the trial. He pleaded guilty to accessory to murder, and was sentenced to 5 years in prison." You may post this if you wish along with my email
