The following description of George H. Wait's accident resulting in his death is from the diary of Ralph Leland Goodrich:
August 3, 1863
"Attended the funeral of [George] Herbert Wait. He was on horseback & was thrown off & struck his private parts on the pommel of the saddle. His testicles were completely mashed. He walked into the house & told his mother that he was not much hurt. There must have been some internal injury."
