First Lady of California. Originally born Bernice Layne in San Francisco, she was the daughter of a Captain with the San Francisco Police Department. Graduating from the University of California Berkeley in 1928, she became a schoolteacher until 1930 when she married San Francisco lawyer Edmund "Pat" Brown, whom she had first met in high school. In 1958, she became First Lady of the state of California when Pat Brown was elected the 32nd Governor of California serving until 1966. In addition, her only son Edmund "Jerry" Brown served as the 34th Governor of California from 1974 until 1982 and her daughter, Kathleen Brown, served as California State Treasurer from 1991 until 1995 and made an unsuccessful campaign for Governor in 1994.Her son was elected governor in 2010.
