Mrs. Free and her late husband moved to this area in 1946. Mrs. Free managed the books for her husband until his retirement in 1988.
She served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross for more than 17 years, was active in the Girl scouts, Seabreeze High School Band Parents Association and local Parents Teachers Associations.
Mrs. Free's former home on Marilyn Avenue was a voting polling station, where she worked as a polling agent. A charter member of the Central Baptist Church, Mrs. Free was known as "Flower Lady" to those in local hospitals. For more than 25 years, she gathered flowers from church services, made them into arrangements and delivered them to those in the hospital.
Mrs. Free also served on the board of trustees, was a member of the Central Baptist Seniors musical group, the Jubilees and was a Sunday school teacher.
Mrs. Free was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Lewie, sons, Earl and Darryl, and her daughter-in-law, Janie Free.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet, of Daytona Beach; a daughter-in-law, Linda, of Daytona Beach; a brother, Chester L. Shirah, of Holly Hill; a sister, Ennis Andrews, of Alabama; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service was held May 22 at Central Baptist Church in Daytona Beach, with the Rev. Douglas Harrell and the Rev. Richard Phillips officiating. She was laid to rest with her late husband, Lewie, in Daytona Memorial Park.
