A pioneer, Samuel James Zimmerly, a Swiss immigrant, moved to New Mexico in 1855 settling in the Socorro area. Samuel married Pablita Torres on November 29, 1866, in San Miguel Parish. He and his wife, Pabilta, had six children, the third of which was Richard Maxmillian Zimmerly. Richard and his wife Eloisa, had ten children. Joseph Louis Zimmerly, born October 7, 1902, in San Antonio, New Mexico, was the second of their children.

Joseph worked for the AT & SF Railroad for 46 years working in many areas of New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. Two of his brothers, Sam and Charles also worked for the AT & SF Railroad for a combined number of years exceeding 125. He retired in 1969 as station agent in Bernalillo. He was a member of the Retired Rail Roaders Association. Known to many people as "Joe from the depot." Joseph loved rail roading and could tell stories that told much of the history of New Mexico.

He was a member of the Catholic Church. He was dedicated family man, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He served as a board member to the Bernalillo Public Schools and was a charter member of the Bernalillo Rotary Club.

Joseph was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Frances Eleanor Zimmerly, of the McKinney family of Las Cruces. He is survived by his sons, Joseph L. Zimmerly, Jr. and wife, Mary, of Goliad, Texas, and Richard F. Zimmerly and wife, Nancy, of Albuquerque; sisters, Alice Del Curto of Socorro, Christine Booth of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Agnes Hodson and husband Keith of Scottsdale, Arizona; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Visitation will Friday, October 21, 1994 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Crestview Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited on Friday, October 21, 1994 at 7:30 pm at the Risen Savior Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 22, 1994 at 12:00 pm where a Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at the Risen Savior Catholic Church with Father Paul Baca as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
