Yuma Lyle White Speed, 87, was born November 29, 1913 in Cordell, Oklahoma. She died May 2, 2001 after a long battle with diabetes. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Fletcher Speed, and her parents, Hugh and Estella White. She attended Oklahoma College for Women.
She had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1947. Yuma was an active member of the Duke City Bridge Club, formerly the Albuquerque Bridge Club, since the early 1950's. She and her husband had both attained the level of Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League. She was a stay-at-home mom all the years her children were growing up and at the same time kept the books for her husband's business.
After the children were grown, she went to work for the Albuquerque Public Schools Cafeterias. She soon became the manager of the then new Mitchell Elementary School Cafeteria. After several years, she became a satellite manager, supervising the cafeterias in a number of schools. After retirement from APS, she cared for her husband of 50 years until his death in 1984. Over the years, she belonged to Eastern Star, Job's Daughters Advisory Board, and the Presbyterian Church.
