Nora Lee was born in Alabama, but not long afterwards her family moved to Girard, a suburb of Columbus, GA, where they lived for 3 years. Then in March, 1904, they moved to Oklahoma, where her brother Chester was born in July, in Romulus, Pottowatomie County. Later they moved to Tonkawa, Kay County, Oklahoma, where they ran a small farm. When Nora Lee was 7, her parents separated and eventually divorced, and her mother Mertie worked the farm. Nora Lee’s uncle Nathan joined them Tonkawa, where he farmed as well. In December, 1912, there was a family reunion in Tonkawa, for which see the photos. In December, 1914, Nora Lee’s ailing grandfather, William Brown, came to live with them, and he died in their home, 14 months later.
As for Nora Lee’s father, Mitchell, he moved to Los Angeles and remarried. According to her son Lee Earl Keyes, Nora Lee did not see her father again until she was 22, and not again after that.

On June 30, 1919, Nora Lee was married to Wilson Earl Keyes, called “Earl,” in Newkirk, Kay County, and they settled in Wewoka, Seminole County, Oklahoma, where Earl worked as a mechanic with his brother Alonzo Pierce Keyes, called Pierce, who also lived with them. In 1929 and 1932 they were living Oklahoma City, where Earl worked as a painter and paperhanger. In 1935 they were living in Kay County, where Nora Lee had grown up, and in 1940 they were living in Perkins, Oklahoma, where Earl had grown up. Soon after that they moved to Stillwater, in Payne County, where Earl’s father had been living when he died. During this time they had five childen: Phillip Pierce Keyes, Lee Earl Keyes, Kenneth Wilhite Keyes, Mary Ella Myrtle Keyes, Phyllis Virginia Keyes. Their firstborn, called “Pierce,” died in Oklahoma City aged ten when he was hit by an automobile.

In 1952 they bought a home in Albuquerque. Nora Lee’s mother Mertie came to live with them in 1960, and she died there in January, 1963. In May of 1973 her bachelor brother Chester joined them in Albuquerque, where he died ten months later. On June 30, 1984, Nora Lee and Earl celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They both died four years later.
