Sarah Lavina Sumney Shakley was the fifth of seven children born to Christiana Stiverson and Isaac Sumney VI of Butler County Pennsylvania.
She married William Edward Shakley (a Civil War soldier - service dates 1864-1865) in 1848 in Butler County, PA when she was only 16 years old. According to the 1900 Federal Census Record she and William had a total of seven children but only three were living in 1900.
Sarah Lavina lived her entire life in Butler County, and died at the age of 84 years old, seven years after her husband.
