Shirley Davis, 87, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at Wedgewood Care Center.

Shirley was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Shenandoah, Iowa, to John and Corine Wilson.

Survivors are: daughter, Mary Lynn (Tom) Meleeney of Arco, Minn., son, Jackson of Plymouth, Minn; grandsons, Bill Underwood, his wife, Kari; Richard Underwood of Minneapolis, Minn.; niece, Susan Smith and her family of Norfolk; and a special friend and caregiver, Vera M. Reddish and her son, Tom, of Grand Island.

The family moved to Grand Island when Shirley was in Jr. High. She attended Walnut Jr. High and Grand Island High School, from which she graduated in 1941.

While in Jr. High she met the love of her life, Adrian Davis, whom she married on November 29, 1942.

Shirley and Adrian were on the decoration committee for the Class of 1941's 45th reunion in 1986. Shirley enjoyed that reunion very much and often talked about it.

Adrian entered the Army Air Corps on Feb. 2, 1943. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Shirley followed him throughout the USA during his service until he was ordered overseas.

She worked as a telephone operator at North Western Bell after graduation and prior to their marriage.

The couple had two children, Tom and Mary Lynn.

Adrian worked as manager for Hesteds Stores for 19 years, having taken his training in the Grand Island Store. During those years the family lived in Ord, Neb., Gillette, Wyo., and Winner, S.D.

They returned in 1969 to Grand Island, where he owned and operated Davis Engineering until his retirement in 1983.

Shirley, Adrian, and Tom loved to travel and enjoyed all of these adventures. While at home, Shirley enjoyed hours in her flower garden and working on the lawn. The lawn was always beautifully manicured and because of her hours of work and patience, was one of the most beautiful home settings in Grand Island.

Shirley and Adrian made a home for Shirley's mother, Corine Wilson, in her declining years.

Shirley was an active volunteer with the Grand Island Special Olympics. Aside from giving her son, Tom, an opportunity to participate in these activities, she assisted coaches, helping athletes who loved her dearly. Although she had not been active recently, all the athletes who knew her always greeted her with hugs and "come to our meets. We miss you!" These young people gave her a great deal of pleasure and she loved being with them.

Since 2007, Shirley has resided in Country House Residence and Wedgewood Care Center. Both places have made her final days more comfortable and pleasant. Shirley loved each and every dog she ever owned.

Shirley was preceded in death by: beloved husband, Adrian; beloved son, Tom. her parents and sister, Clara Alice Wilson.
