Charles Cope Thompson was born on November 2, 1840, in Marion, Ohio, to Edward Thompson and Ellen Foos Thompson. He married Matilda Messenger on March 14, 1865, in his hometown. They arrived by covered wagon in Kansas in 1869. They had 11 children in 23 years. Four of those children died in a diphtheria epidemic in 1880. He died on February 24, 1911, in Burbank, California, at the age of 70, and was buried in Bronson, Kansas.
