Dr. Stanton "Jake" Barron, 73, prominent retired Abilene pediatrician and medical leader, who was active in church and community organizations, died Friday, June 23, 2000.

A vesper service will be held at 7:00 P.M. Monday evening at First Baptist Church in Abilene with Dr. Phil Christopher officiating. Graveside services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday in Restland Cemetery in Dallas with Dr. Bruce McIver officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, Abilene, TX.

Born September 2, 1926 in McKinney, Texas, the son of Stanton Jacob and Madge Carver Barron, Dr. Barron and the former Jacquelyn Emerson were married July 25, 1953 in Dallas. Dr. Barron was a 1943 graduate of Plano High School and a 1946 graduate of Baylor University. He earned his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1949. He was engaged in the practice of pediatrics from 1952 until his retirement in July 1993. He began his practice in pediatrics in Corsicana, Texas in 1952, where he helped to establish the Medical Arts Clinic of Corsicana. From 1954 to 1956 he served in the U.S. Air Force as Chief of Pediatrics, Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota. He and Jackie moved to Abilene in 1957, where he practiced pediatrics for 36 years until his retirement.

Dr. Barron was the former chief of staff and chief of pediatrics at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Described by Michael Waters, president and chief executive officer at Hendrick, as "a unique individual, a great person, a great pediatrician and a medical statesman," Hendrick recently honored Dr. Barron as the person responsible for bringing the Children's Miracle Network to Abilene.

He was a life member of the American Medical Association and Texas Medical Association. He was made a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics in 1955 and served as an oral examiner for that board for almost 20 years. He became a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 1957 and served on several committees of HEW and other governmental agencies.

He was a physician and consultant for the Abilene Independent School District, Christian Homes of Abilene, West Texas Rehabilitation Center, MHMR and Dyess Air Force Base. He was also a previous member of the Board of Directors of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and the Medical Institute for Sexual Health. In addition, he was the former president of the Taylor-Jones-Haskell Medical Society and past chairman of the Medical Board of Hendrick Medical Center.

He served as a member of the Board of Trustees at Hardin-Simmons University and as a member of the Development Boards at both HSU and Baylor.

Dr. Barron devoted a great deal of his time and energy to the development of governmental policy regarding the treatment of children with dyslexia and language and learning disorders. Beginning in 1963, he served as the chairman of the Texas House of Representatives' Committee for Language Disorders. From 1964 to 1965, he was a part of the U.S. Office of Education Research Conference for Dyslexia, and in 1968 served on HEW's National Advisory Committee on Dyslexia and Related Reading Disorders. He served from 1965 to 1971 on the Governor's Council for Children with Language Disorders and from 1967 to 1974 on the World Federation of Neurology Research Committee on Dyslexia. He received the "Friend to Education Award" from the Abilene ISD in 1967 because of his work with dyslexia. He was recognized in May 2000 by HSU's Multisensory Language Training Center with a leadership award and scholarship named in his honor.

The Abilene ISD Nurses honored him for his 25 years of service to the children of the district. In addition, he received outstanding service awards from the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Texas Association of Parents of Children with Learning Disabilities, American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics and Texas Tech College of Medicine.

For many years Dr. Barron was an active member of Abilene's First Baptist Church, where he was a life deacon, past chairman of the Missions Committee and active on many other committees. He was ordained a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Corsicana in 1953 and also served as a deacon at First Southern Baptist Church of Rapid City, South Dakota.

Dr. Barron also had served as a member of the boards of directors of the Abilene Children's Development Center, Abilene Mental Health Retardation and Abilene National Bank. He was a former president and chairman of the board of the Professional Building Corp. He currently was serving as a member of the Board of Governors of the Abilene Philharmonic. Among his other professional and civic memberships: Military Affairs Committee of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Abilene Country Club, Texas Pediatric Society, Abilene Club, American Ambulatory Pediatric Society and Irish-American Pediatric Society.

Survivors include his wife, Jackie of Abilene, four daughters, Virginia Nisbet of Dallas, Joanne and son-in-law Rick Newton of Corsicana, Beverly Barnes of Abilene, and Kathleen and son-in-law Brian Hamilton of Dallas, 11 grandchildren, Jacqueline and Jimmy Nisbet, Corey Newton, Bryan, Elizabeth, Jacob and Jeffery Barnes, Sarah, David, Jake and Mary Beth Hamilton.
