He died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, at his home in rural Armstrong.
Virgil Preston, the son of Earl and Gladys ( Molinder ) Preston, was born Nov. 25, 1930, in rural Swea City.
He received his education in the rural country schools, graduating from Seneca High School.
On July 12, 1950, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Simpson in Blue Earth, Minn. After their marriage, the couple lived and farmed in rural Armstrong his entire life.
He was a active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Armstrong, serving as Trustee and Elder. Virgil served on the DEK Electric Board for many years, serving as president for a term. He enjoyed collecting antique farm toys and attending farm toy shows. Virgil especially enjoyed spending time with his family and attending all of his grandchildren's events. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren always put a smile on his face.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marjorie, of Armstrong; two sons, Paul Preston and his wife, Jane, of Swea City and Mark Preston and his wife, Kathy, of Armstrong and daughter, Peggy Wegner, and her husband, Kevin, of Estherville. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Autumn Larsen and her husband, Jared; Mitchell Preston and his wife, Amy; Chelsea Reed and her husband, Jordan; Erin Brown and her husband, Tony; Preston Wegner; Jared Preston; Emily Wegner and Brenna Wegner. Other survivors include great-grandchildren, Ethan Preston, Emma Preston, Taylor Larsen, Jacob Brown and Carter Brown; and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Preston, Mary Lou Peterson and Kathleen Martin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry; infant son, David; brothers, Howard and Emery and sister, Mavis Cowing.
