Madeline V. Beard of Charleston, formerly of Elkins, passed away on January 3, 2011 at Charleston Area Medical Center after a short illness.

She was a graduate of Elkins High School in Randolph County. Following her high school graduation, she attended Davis and Elkins College. She worked in Washington,
D.C., for the Department of Transportation for several years before returning home to Elkins, where she met her husband.

She was born on May 20, 1922 in
Elkins to the late Dennis and Clara Godwin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl G. Beard II, to whom she was married for 59 years; brothers, Karl Godwin, Kenneth Godwin and Blaine Godwin of Elkins; son-in-law, James Batchelor of Augusta, Ga.; and niece, Bonita Sue Wymer of Elkins.

Surviving are her daughters, Suzanne Batchelor of Augusta, Ga., and Julia B. Shalhoup and husband Nick Shalhoup of Charleston; son, Thomas L. Beard of Cross Lanes;
grandchildren, Michael Shalhoup of Hoboken, N.J., Erica Shalhoup Paterno and husband Tony Paterno of Charleston, Benjamin Batchelor of Augusta, Ga.,James Batchelor and girlfriend True Spain of Atlanta, Ga., and Bambi Crook and
her husband Newman Crook of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and great-grandchildren, Madeline and Owen Crook.One of five children, she is also survived by her brother, Bill Godwin and wife Hettie Godwin of Elkins; nieces, Becky Poe and
husband Terry Poe of Elkins and Elizabeth Ferguson and husband Dann Ferguson of Toledo, Ohio; nephews, Karl Godwin Jr., Joe Godwin and wife Sandy Godwin of Elkins and Gary Godwin and wife Susan Godwin of Elkins; and several
great-nieces and nephews.

Madeline was the unsung hero of her family, creating a home
for them full of love and warmth. A devoted gardener, Madeline cultivated her flowers with loving attention. Her home was filled with family antiques she meticulously restored and crafts of all kinds. An avid sports fan, she
followed the career of her favorite quarterback, Chad Pennington, and cheered on both the Mountaineers and the Thundering Herd. A music lover, she and her husband shared a fondness for jazz and swing songs and dancing to those
tunes. Beloved by all who knew her, Madeline adored her family and friends, demonstrating her feelings through countless acts of thoughtfulness.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, 4122 MacCorkle Avenue SW, South Charleston, with a short memorial tribute to be held at 7:30 p.m.

She will be laid to rest at the McNeel Cemetery in
Hillsboro, Pocahontas County, on Saturday, January 8, 2011, but there will be no graveside service due to inclement weather.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the CAMC Foundation (designated beneficiary, Cardiac Rehabilitation Program) at 3412 Staunton Avenue, Charleston, WV. Snodgrass Funeral Home in South Charleston is responsible for all arrangements.
