John Carr was born February 8, 1880, in Ohio, one of 11 children born to George Norman Carr (1849-1917) and Susan Rosaltha Young (1857-1925). His parents married in Ohio on July 17, 1875. His father was a farmer who owned his own land. John's siblings included: Alice Belinda, Edwin, John, Susan Rosaltha, George Grover, and Francis E. The family moved from Ohio to Kansas when John was a small child and then on to Oklahoma before he was 18. He married Carrie Clark in 1902 and raised a family of 11 children by farming. In 1930, he and his family lived in Canadian, Oklahoma (Cleveland County) on the farm they owned.

Carrie died on August 22, 1947, in Saint Louis, Oklahoma (Pottawatomie County) and was buried there in Mars Hill Cemetery. John died on July 11, 1961, and was buried beside his wife.
