James was the fifth child of fifteen born to Adrion Carson and Jane Conley Carson. He fought for the Union in the Civil War, joining the Iowa 4th Cavalry Regiment, Company H, on November 26, 1861. He was captured and held in a Confederate prisoner of war camp where he died.
