eighth president of Dartmouth (1877-1892)

son of Samuel Colcord Bartlett and Eleanor Pettengill

graduated from Dartmouth College (1836) and then studied at Andover Theological Seminary. Graduating in 1842, he was ordained the following year and became pastor of the Congregational Church in Monson MA. In 1846 he resigned and because professor of Intellectual Philosophy and Rhetoric at Western Reserve College. Thereafter he spent five years (1852-1857) in Manchester NH with the Franklin Street Church and then pastor of Chicago's New England Church (1856-1859). Although he resigned his pastorship, he remained in Chicago as professor of Biblical Literature at Chicago Theological Seminary, a position he held for eighteen years.

In 1877 he accepted the presidency of Dartmouth College. His uncompromising style and approach was in great contrast to his predecessor and the general atmosphere of the College. His tenure was an embattled one, bringing unwanted national attention to the College. There was a formal investigation after which the trustees renewed their trust in Bartlett. He continued another ten years and then resigned, taking on teaching and literary duties until the time of his death.
