Hugo Grüters was the Artistic Director of the Bonn Philharmonic Choir (Philharmonischer Chor Bonn) from 1898 to 1922, and the the Bonn Municipal Music Director (Städtischer Musikdirektor). He taught composition to the violinist and composer Adolf Busch, who married his daughter Frieda. Max Reger dedicated his Romantic Suite, Op. 125, to "Herrn Professor Hugo Grüters."

He is listed among the "Honor Graves" of the Poppelsdorfer Friedof Cemetery ("Ehrengräber" auf dem Poppelsdorfer Friedhof):
