Information about Joseph Jackson Ross, as provided by Marvin Ross Langston:
Family tradition has it that Joseph Jackson Ross left Carroll County, Tennessee bound for Texas. Why he stopped and remained in Chickasaw County, Mississippi (later to become part of what is known as Calhoun County) is unknown. However, I think his nephew (or cousin) William Ross was already located there and he decided to give that area of the country a try. He remained until his death in 1894. He first purchased land on 19 Nov 1851 from C.M. Lee. The land was originally patented by Samuel B. Lee on 10 Dec 1847. It was located in Sec 8, Twp 23 R 9 E. Consideration for the deed was $350.00. While remaining in the area, Joseph Jackson Ross evidently was quite popular with his neighbors since they elected him to the State Legislature in 1880, he served one 2 year term. He served both Calhoun and Yalobusha Counties jointly.
