She and the children ran the farm because her husband, James Anderson March, was too frail to do heavy work from an illness he contracted during the Civil War. After his death, she continued to operate the farm on her own, even after her sons had left home and started their own families. When she was a young girl about 12 years old, her family traveled by wagon and relocated from Vigo County Indiana to Missouri. She walked barefoot the whole way, which she said, was not uncommon in those days.
