ROCKLAND - Arnold F. Blastow, Sr., 88, died Saturday, June 25, 2005 at Shore Village Nursing Center, after a long illness. Born at Little Deer Isle, May 8, 1917, he was the fourth eldest child of ten born to Harry A. and Eliza Shepard Blastow.

In early years, he lived both at Deer Isle and Rockland. During World War II, he worked as a welder at Bath Iron Works.

For more than 58 years, he worked as a commercial fisherman aboard F.J. O'Hara & Son and Forty Fathom fishing vessels out of Rockland, New Bedford and Gloucester. After retiring from full-time fishing, Mr. Blastow's love of the water and fishing industry, drew him to another several years employment on F.J. O'Hara & Son's docks.

He was a member of the Rockland Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Mr. Blastow was pre-deceased by one son Arnold F. Blastow, Jr. in 1965; six brothers, Cecil "Shirley", John, Edwin H., Hollis, Valmore G., and George Blastow; three sisters, Rose Joyce, Isabell Hutchins, and Elsie Harvey. He is survived by one son, Allen Harvey and his wife Priscilla of Rockland; two daughters, Deborah M. Merrill and her husband Chris of Rockport, Janet S. Clark of Canton, Ohio; five grandchildren, Pamela G. Henderson, Michelle Schönig, Tanya Lynne Harvey, Richard Blastow, Stacey Blastow; two great-grandchildren, Kylee Renee Thompson, Lea Henderson, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Achorn Cemetery, Old County Road, Rockland, (Bangor Daily News 6/27/2005)
