Son of John and Eliza Abel Goddard. The family originated in Somerset County and Wicomico County in Maryland, relocated to Bond County and Madison County in Illinois prior to 1840 and was in St Charles County as well as St Louis County Missouri by 1860.

Napoleon first married Sarah Park, 11 May 1842, Bond County Illinois. He married Mary Ann Magdeline Dubose Whitworth before October 1849, Darlington County South Carolina. He married Mary Jane Foxworth, after July 1870 in South Carolina.
