SWEARINGEN, PATRICK HENRY (1834–1880). Patrick Henry Swearingen, lawyer and soldier, son of Richard Johnson and Margaret (Conner) Swearingen and brother of Dr. Richard M. Swearingen and Helen Marr Swearingen Kirby, was born in Noxubee County, Mississippi, on May 25, 1834. The family settled in Washington County, Texas, in 1848. Patrick Swearingen attended Chappell Hill Male and Female Institute (see CHAPPELL HILL FEMALE COLLEGE) and graduated from Centenary College in Louisiana in 1857. He studied law while he taught at Chappell Hill and was admitted to the bar at Brenham in 1857. Swearingen served under Col. Franklin C. Wilkes in the Second Texas Lancers of the Twenty-fourth Texas Cavalry, C.S.A., until his command was captured in Arkansas in January 1863. He was later exchanged and transferred to the Army of Tennessee and to the Trans-Mississippi Department and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In 1866 he resumed his law practice at Brenham, where he died on March 15, 1880.
