"Ike" Daniels Run Down By Train Near Glass Factory
Had been picking up Coal Along Pan Handle Tracks when the Morning Accomodation Struck Him--Former Inmate of Infirmary.
Isaac Daniels, age 53 was almost instantly killed Tuesday morning at 6:30 O'clock, while picking up coal along the Pennsylvania tracks at the second curve near the gravel pit, just east of Coshocton, when the morning accommodation train, No 75 struck him, hurling him to the side of the track, breaking his neck, crushing a hole in the back of his skull and breaking his right arm above the elbow and at the wrist.
There are four tracks at this point. ATWV&O freight train was on the south track. Daniels was walking along the second track from the north, there being one track between him and the freight. When No 75 hit him he was thrown clear of all the tracks into a pile of ties on the north side. His clothing was almost stripped from him and one shoe was torn off.
The engineer on No 75 saw Daniels and applied the air but not in time to prevent the accident. The flagman Harry Johnson was the first to reach the lifeless body. Passengers on the train also rushed out. A galvanized bucket with a few chunks of coal in it explained what Daniels had been doing.
Howard Wolfe was notified and the body was brought to the morgue on fourth street in the ambulance.
"Ike" Daniels was originally from the Cooperdale vicinity and has a sister Mrs Wm Griffith, residing a mile north of Cooperdale. He was never very bright and eked out an existance by performing whatever work he could get to do. For awhile a few years ago his health was very bad and he was taken to the county infirmary but after partially recovering he left there. He was married but he and his wife separated several years ago as he was unable to support her. One of the sons formerly worked at the glass factory.
Daniels was working Monday helping Mr and Mrs Buckmaster move their goods to the little house along the Wheeling & Lake Erie tracks on the Jas Moore farm about a hundred yards from the glass factory. His parents are dead.
"Ike" was known by many people throughout the county and was frequently seen in Coshocton. He was almost childlike in his simplicity and while not considered mentally sound he never tried to harm anyone.
Corner Lower having gone to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to take a post graduate course. He found the following articles in Daniels clothing: A cheap watch, which is still running; two keys, a watch charm, a finger ring with a set in it and a small amount of money.
There was also the following queerly written note:
"Tom Bit and Let Me Know Whot House it is. Bit so I will Know."
Mr Carpenter, of the West Lafayette road, is a son-in-law of Mr Daniels. The Barleen Family is also related to him.
The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon and interment will be made at South Lawn Cemetery.
