John William was the oldest son born in Alabama in 1851. By 1860 he had two more brothers, Richard Lusky and Benjamin S. Gray near Elkhart, Anderson County, Texas.
By 1870 another son, James Frank Gray, was born, and lived in Anderson County with the father, mother, four sons, and mother-in-law Nancy Smith Williams.
In 1875, John William Gray married Elizabeth Hemby and they had four children and a step-son Arthur Strickland by 1900. The children included Genoa Gray, Wilbert Henry Gray, and Paxton Hemby Gray.
By 1910 John's wife Elizabeth passed away and John lived near Grapeland, TX with his two sons Wilbert and Paxton.
John William Gray passed away in 1923 and was buried at Kyle Cemetery according to his Texas Death Certificate.
