During a college break, while traveling by train to her home in New York, she met the man who would later become her husband. Although that train trip found her beau en route to the South Pacific in service with the U.S. Marine Corp, they courted by letter throughout World War II. Upon learning that her love had been wounded during the invasion at Iwo Jima, she rushed to his bedside as soon as he returned to the Marine Hospital at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Upon his release from the hospital, she married Corporal Pitt H. Boyington, Jr. at Brooklyn, New York. The couple made their first home at Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard, where Mr. Boyington continued with the Marine Corp. Following Mr. Boyington's discharge from active duty, they moved to Mars Hill. They lived in Aroostook County eight years before moving here in 1954. During this time she enjoyed creating greeting cards that helped supplement the family's income.
Returning to college, she attended Glen Cove Bible College and ultimately earned a B.A. in Education from the University of Maine.
She taught at Pen Bay Christian School in the early years of that institution and served one year as Administrator of that school. She left that position to home-school her own grandchildren, also teaching them Art and Music. In recent years, she found pleasure in knitting hats, booties and blankets for the Penobscot Bay Medical Center Maternity Department. She composed her autobiography as a gift to her children. For the past three years, she was an active member of Souls Harbor Church of God, Rockland. She was also active in the music program at Souls Harbor and often played the organ and xylophone.
Pre-deceased by her husband in 2000 and a sister Myrtle Metzler, Mrs. Boyington is survived by one son John Boyington and his wife Allison of Appleton; three daughters, Florence Leach, Alice Farnham and her husband Ed all of Rockland, Deborah Haines of Ravena, NY; two sisters, Florence Rowe of New Jersey, Marion Tilebein and her husband Lewis of Florida; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
Interment will be at a later date in Achorn Cemetery, Rockland. (Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins on-line)
