James Thadeus "Thad" Taff was probably named for his grandfather, Thadeus A. Taff. At some point in his life he changed the spelling of his last name to "Taft". In my genealogy research his name was shown as "Taff" in the 1900 and 1910 Census. On his WW I draft registration his name was shown as "John" Thad Taft and he signed "Thad Taft". On the 1920, 1930, and 1940 Census his name is spelled "Taft". The rest of his family spelled their last name "Taff".
"Thad" Taff's father, John Andrew Taff, died in an accident (tree fell on him) when Thad was 10 years old. Thad, his two brothers and two sisters were reared by their mother, Mary Frances Elizabeth Carter Taff.
