Mary Tams Clifton

Mary Tams Clifton almost 102, died December 28, 2010. She was born January 14, 1909 in Willard, Utah, to Elias Thomas and Sara Helen Lofthouse Tams. She was the 10th or 14 children. She graduated from Box Elder High School in 1936 and Weber College in 1928. She then taught school until her marriage to George C. Clifton in the Salt Lake Temple in 1930.

In 1946 Mary and George opened Clifton's Ladies Apparel on Washington Boulevard in downtown Ogden. Later, they opened the Joy Shop and Mary's Cotton Shop, also in downtown Ogden. While George handled the accounting, Mary was the active manager of the stores. She continued to wok in the current location of Clifton's Ladies Apparel until her retirement at age 92.

Mary was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in many positions. Prominent among these callings was her service as Mount Ogden Ward and Ogden East Stake Librarian, callings she held for over 30 years. She spent many hours each week maintaining and improving the library, often showing representatives from other ward and stakes her resources and organization.

She was the loving grandmother who hosted her large family each Sunday for treats and conversation. She faithfully sent birthday cards to her four children, 22 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great-grandchildren. She was a diligent scholar and continued reading until age 98.

With George she traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, and the Caribbean, and in he later years her dreams of exotic travel became a reality when she was able to visit England, Ireland, Scotland, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and China.

She will be remembered for her sweet disposition, gratitude, and patience.

She is survived by her daughters, Clarene (Bob) Critchlow, Lavon Jennings, Janith (Grant L.) Wright and Tamra (Larry) Mortenson; her brother, Merlin Tams; and her many grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, George C. Clifton, and two son-in-laws, Dearden A. Jennings and S. Tim Morris.
