Auto Crash Victim Remains Unconscious
Hope Held For Life of Teacher
Mrs. Dove Thomas Struck by Truck While Enroute to Rural School Friday Morning
Although unconscious for 100 hours and still in that condition, doctors are now hopeful for the recovery of Mrs. Dove Thomas, who was seriously injured in an auto crash Friday morning. A normal pulse and the ability to take some nourishment gives encouragement to attendants at the Coleman hospital.

The accident happened two miles north of Estherville on highway No. 17. Mrs. Thomas who teaches Ellsworth township rural school No. 5, better known as the Sunde valley school had [gone] home to Estherville Thursday evening to make some arrangements for a school program to be held Monday. She was returning to her school and taken old No. 17 to avoid the bumps and ruts in the new grade. She was driving her car onto the new highway when struck by a heavily loaded truck driven by Bernard Bowman of Curlew. The driver and Paul Grafe riding with him claim that Mrs. Thomas attempted to cross ahead of him and that he was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the rear end of her car. Others say that Mrs. Thomas had brought her car to a full stop before driving onto highway 17. Mrs. Thomas remained in her car but was evidently thrown either against the windshield or the top.

The injured woman and the two truck men were brought to Estherville by Lloyd Brunsvold, deputy county treasurer who resided close to where the accident happened and who was enroute to Estherville for the day's work.

Mrs. Thomas' daughter, Mrs. Sheldon Fillenworth of Cedar Rapids is here to be with her mother.

Miss Dorothy Nelson of east of Estherville is substituting for Mrs. Thomas in the Ellsworth school. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, March 5, 1935)

Ex-County Teacher Dies At Rest Home
Mrs. Charles (Dove Trimble) Thomas, 86, a former longtime Emmet County teacher, died late yesterday afternoon at the Simpson Rest Home where she had made her home for the past 14 years. Death was attributed to complications of advanced age.

Born March 21, 1877 in Washington County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benoni Trimble. She attended the Washington County schools and was a graduate of Morningside College, Sioux City. Mrs. Trimble taught school in Washington County before coming to Estherville.

She was married to Charles S. Thomas in June, 1900 at her home here in Estherville. Mr. Thomas died in March 1905.

Mrs. Thomas taught in the Gruver school and in other schools throughout the county, continuing her teaching until 1934 when she was in an auto accident. After that time her health did not permit further teaching.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Sheldon (Birdie) Fillenworth of Wheatridge, Colo., and two grandchildren.

She was the last surviving member of her family, having been preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and one brother.

Funeral services are to be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Fuhrman Funeral Home, the Rev. William R. Noland officiating. Interment is to be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Friends may call at Fuhrman's Friday and until time of services Saturday morning. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 8, 1963)
