When 16, her father died in a horse/train accident. She and brother, Herman, and sisters worked on the farm to support their mother and family. She worked in Milwaukee several years prior to her marriage.
Martha married August Herman Lawrenz Nov 4, 1908 at St. Paul's Lutheran, Algoma. August and Martha began farming a half mile north of Rio Creek on Cty P. They later purchased from his parents the farm on which August was raised. They continued to farm the 160 acres until August's death in 1953.
August and Martha raised four children on the farm: Carl, Ruth, Everett and Elaine. Martha had a large vegetable and flower garden.
Martha was active in the Ladies Aid at St. John's Lutheran, Rankin. Her children participated in many 4-H activities.
In her late years, Martha became a resident of the Havenet in Algoma. The Havenet was owned by her nephew, Walter Schmeling. Martha died on her birthday in 1965.
