Son of Hannah (Peck) and Captain Nathaniel Howland. He married Jane Lovell Blanchard, September 27, 1830, in Franklin, New Hampshire. The Howlands moved to Buffalo, New York right after their marriage. Three years later they went to Cleveland, Ohio where he set up a book store. He was a printer and bookbinder by occupation. In 1838, they moved to Newburg, Michigan and then to Roscoe, Illinois. Known children: Phebe Lovejoy (m. Asa S. Abbott, Jr); John Carver (m. Melinda A. Palmer);Hannah Peck; Frederick Lefavor (m. Mrs. Mary E. Johnson Young); Hannah Peck (m. Benjamin F. Jenkins); Jane Blanchard (twin) (m. Charles Platt); Lydia Richmond (twin) (m. George R. Smith); George Hallet; Marcia Conner (m. Morgan M. Jenkins); Bradford; Mary (m. Howard G. Day); and Lucia Ann (m. Frank A. Day). After his death, his widow married Dr. Nathan H. Palmer.
