Bessie Lee Dinkins (Dinkines) married Jim Bumpass on Sept. 1, 1901 at the age of 17 and became stepmother to his three children from his first marriage to Maggie Smith. Jim and Bessie added six children of their own before Jim died in 1910. After Jim's death, Bessie and her children went to live at the Buckner Orphan's home in Dallas. (The three stepchildren were taken in by relatives.) Years later, Bessie married Oscar Carter and had two more children with him.
