Harold Bjornstad was the son and oldest of five children born to Kristian and Olina (Quanrud) Bjornstad. He grew up on various family farms around Inkster ND. After High School, he remained living at home and assisted his father in farming business. He was drafted into the military service at the onset of WWII, when the United States declared war on Japan and Germany, and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He was trained as an aircraft mechanic and performed those duties in India, on the various transport-type aircraft that flew the famous "Burma Hump" and went on several missions to China whenever an aircraft mechanic was required to accompany the mission. After WWII was over, he returned to North Dakota for a brief time and worked for the state highway department, but remained in the active Air Force Reserves. He was called back to active duty at the start of the Korean War (1950) and remained on active duty, retiring as a senior master sergeant in 1963. On December 11, 1954 he married Marie Escoe Price in Peoria IL, who died on January 7, 1988 and was also buried in Onarga Cemetery. She had suffered a stroke about ten years prior to her death which rendered her an invalid and unable to speak, and with the assistance of medical aids he took care of her in his home. He was a member of the VFW Post 1903 in Onarga IL and the American Legion Post 248 in North Dakota. He succumbed to pneumonia after he slipped on the ice and broke his hip as a result of the fall.
