Walter Gailfus was born in Ontario, Canada on October 3, 1860. He emigrated to North Dakota to the area called the Turtle Mountains in July of 1884. During the month of July of 1884 he became a citizen of the United States.
On February 8, 1887 he married Lillian Locklin in Fairview Township. Walter and Lillian homesteaded 160 acres in Towner County.
Walter and Lillian had five children, Vella Elfrida, February 12, 1888; Leo, April 28, 1890; Cora May, June 9, 1892; Alfred Ruben, September 29, 1896 and John Lehman, July 23, 1902.
