Robert William Shipman, 63, died in Hamilton Nursing Home on Saturday, August 29, following an extended illness. Graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 1, at Thomas Ranch Cemetery with Rev. Jess Chaney officiating.
Mr. Shipman was born in Hamilton County on Oct. 26, 1923, the son of John L. and Bettie Willeford Shipman. He had lived most of his life in the Hamilton area. He was a welder and steel fabricator. Mr. Shipman was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his mother, Bettie Shipman, of Hamilton; two children, Kathy Elaine Butler of Maryland and Robert H. Shipman of Waco; a sister, Ann Alexander of Hamilton; a brother, Clovis Shipman, of Hamilton; and two grandchildren. An infant son preceded him in death." This obit was supplied by Elreeta Weathers.
The obit says that Robert was buried at the Thomas Cemetery in rural Hamilton County. His aunt Lola is buried there so there is a connection to this cemetery. And my mother-in-law, Frances Raibourn says she remembers going to his funeral there. The stone that is present at Oakwood Cemetery may have been placed there in error, or its possible, the body was moved to Oakwood at some point. It is not known for sure in which cemetery he rests.
It is said that Robert was an eccentric man, even to the point of having a UFO landing pad in his yard. He lived near Oakwood Cemetery and its believed he did not drive a car but is said to have walked all over Hamilton.
