Norva ‘Jean' [Shepard] Wyrill passed away at the age of 84 at Hays Medical Center on December 27, 2010. Jean was born April 27, 1926 in rural Rooks county near Plainville, KS. The fourth child born to David and Nancy Jane [Mapes] Shepard, Jean grew up during the Great Depression. As a child, she started school at the Windy Ridge Country school and graduated from Plainville High School. She completed her 2-year teaching certificate at Fort Hays Teaching College. She taught second grade for one year at Phillipsburg Elementary School. During this time she met John Bruce Wyrill, Jr. in 1946. Jean was introduced to ‘Johnnie' at a dance by college friend and future sister in-law, Dorothy Wyrill Behnke.

Johnnie and Jean were married at the Plainville United Methodist parsonage October 24, 1947. They made their home at the west edge of Kirwin until the dam was built in 1955. They then they moved to a farm north and west of Kirwin, which would be her home for the rest of her life. In December of 2007 Jean made the move from her house to Prairie Haven care facility in Kensington, Ks where she lived until shortly before her death.

Three children were born to this union John Bruce, III, Linda Dianne, and David William. Jean's sister of Terre Haute, Indiana died in 1961. Mary Margaret Cain's death left behind a husband Rush, and four children, John David, Billy, Bob, and Anabelle Cain. After that time, John and Jean became second parents during the summer months when the Cain children were part of Johnnie and Jean's household. The seven cousins made many fond memories during these summer adventures together.

Jean and John were married for 55 years until John's death on December 26, 2002.

Jean's life was one of service to her family, friends, and community. She was a cooking enthusiast all of her life to the delight of all who knew her. Her meals will always be remembered and her advice on how to cook just about anything will be greatly missed. She was also accomplished in candlemaking, candy making, knitting, sewing, and could play the saw. She will be missed most for her loving kindness and loyalty toward her family and friends. Jean was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kirwin, the International Guild of Candlemakers Association (IGCA), Eastern Star, the United Methodist Women, American Legion Auxilary, and Lady Lion's Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents David and Nancy Shepard, her sister Mary Margaret Cain, her brothers, Foster and Howard, and her husband John B. Wyrill, Jr. She is survived by her three children John and wife, Kathy of Kirwin, Linda Wyrill of Puyallup, WA, and David and wife, Sarah of Kirwin, 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Contributions to Jean's memorial can be made to the United Methodist Women of Kirwin and the Kirwin Fire Department.
