St. George, Utah - Rex McAllister passed away December 25, 2010 in St. George, Utah. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Rex was known to his family as "Pop" throughout his adult life. A name he cherished. He was born to Joseph William (Jodi Mac) and Kate Bleak McAllister on September 14, 1919 in St. George. He married Pearl Matheson in Las Vegas on September 18, 1941 and later sealed in the St. George LDS Temple. Rex served in the Navy four years ans was stationed in the South Pacific Islands as a flight mechanic. After his discharge in 1945, he and Pearl returned to St. George where they bought a home and raised three children: Jay, Rexine and Mary Ann. Rex worked for Standard Oil and then for Ted Warthen at St. George Service for several years as well as with his father in the piano business. He eventually became a Baldwin Piano dealer and also a State Farm Insurance Agent. Pearl passed away in February 1985. Rex met Jane Averett Holden on December 24, 1986 and they were married May 2, 1987. They were sealed in the St. George LDS Temple in January 1990. Rex was a long time member of the St. George Rotary where he served as President and led the music for over 50 years. He retired from the Rotary due to health issues. He and Jane loved traveling in their fifth wheel and visiting many areas of the West. Rex was as gentle man, kind and concerned about his family and friends alike. He never said an unkind word about or to anyone. His family always came first in his life. He truly loved the Lord and served in many callings in the church. The callings he loved were Elders Quorum President, Home Teacher, and in the Young Men's organization. He is survived by his devoted wife of 23 years, Jane; his son and daughters: J.W. "Zip" (Brenda) McAllister, Rexine ( Dennis) Rowley, and Mary Ann McAllister; grandchildren: Jannita Mitchell, Jade (Amanda) McAllister, Jodi Lawrimore, Darin Rowley, Rex "RJ" Rowley (Rachel), Dane Rowley (Angela), Robyn (Silas) Aitchison and Denita (Jeff) Whitehead. Also surviving are Jane's daughers: Vickie (Allan) Johnson and Kathy Jane (Brian) Jones and their children: Jessi (Christie) Johnson, Terri Ann (Eric) Adams, Shelene (Brandon) Maughan, Jennifer (Brandon) Griffiths, Spencer (Amanda) Jones, Tamarynn (Daniel) Bennett, Bryce (Nicole) Jones, Kenneth (Tawnya) Jones, Veronica Jones and Derek (Myrianne) Jones. Also surviving are 40 great-grandchildren with two more on the way and by sisters-in-law, Remerice Matheson and Elaine (Lewis) Mullins. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pearl; his grandson, Ryan Mac Rowley; Jane's son, Joe Holden; and granddaughter, Kristy Jones. The family thanks all of the doctors and nurses who cared for him. Our heartfelt and deepest thanks and appreciation to Dr. Clark Staheli, Deni, Lisa and Lorraine for the years of care they so lovingly gave Rex. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George LDS 1st Ward Chapel, 591 West 500 North, St. George, Utah. A visitation will be held Wednesday, December 29th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd. and on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m at the Chapel, prior to services. Interment will be at the St. George City Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
