John Wine Davis, Master Sgt., U.S. Army Ret., 71, of Staunton, died on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, in his home.

He was born Feb. 10, 1935, in Rockingham County, Va., a son of the late John Stickley and Leona Beatrice (Rinica) Davis. Following his graduation from Harrisonburg High School, he enlisted in the United States Army and embarked on a 33-year career in military service.

Extremely proud of his country, he considered it an honor to have served in both the U.S. Army and Virginia Army National Guard until his retirement in December 1987, having attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He saw active duty during the Korean War as an Infantryman in both the Indirect Fire and Heavy Weapons divisions and was awarded a Bronze Oakleaf Cluster for meritorious service. A highlight of his military career was his selection as a member of the honor guard when President Dwight D. Eisenhower visited Staunton in the 1960s. He was last assigned to the Staunton Armory and served as a Master Recruiter for over 10 years.

While he was truly a "go-getter", and never stopped working, John still held his family as the foremost priority in his life and received a great deal of personal satisfaction from sharing his special talents with them. His reputation as an excellent cook will continue to be a family legacy, especially his homemade bread, fried country ham and cinnamon buns. Possessing a great sense of humor and spirit of generosity, he always had a kind word and a "thank you" for everyone, and never failed to "take a bad situation and make it good". In his spare time, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed building models. He also had a tremendous love and appreciation of animals, one that he most recently shared with his devoted canine companion, Dolly. John was a man of strong faith and was a devoted member of Grace Fellowship, Staunton, as well as the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

His family members include his wife, Wilma Lucille (Crosby) Davis and his children and their spouses, John Ward and Vickie C. Davis of Broadway, Jane D. and Jeff W. Martin of Harrisonburg, Debra L. Kwolek of Harrisonburg and Shawn J-W Davis of Staunton; his grandchildren, John Ward Davis Jr. and his wife, Holly, of New Market, Michala Kwolek and Erin Davis, both of Harrisonburg and a great-grandson, Matthew Davis. He is also survived by two special nieces, Brooke Lynn Powell and Maura Botkin, both of Staunton, and a faithful friend, Garland Melton.

In grateful appreciation, the family would like to thank Kim Plotman of Home Health, the nurses on the first floor of the Augusta Medical Center and those at HOPE as well as the Doctors and staff at the AMC Cancer Center for your professional and compassionate care of John.

A service to celebrate the life of John Wine Davis will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2006, in the Chapel of the Hamrick Funeral Home, 18 West Frederick Street, Staunton, by the Rev. Lee Robbins. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisonburg, with military honors provided by the United States Army Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Marvin Crosby, Randy Fisher, Frankie Fisher, Mark Crosby, Clyde Hollingsworth, Charles Miller and Paul Harnet.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2006, at the Hamrick Funeral Home, 18 West Frederick Street, Staunton, and at other times at their residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Augusta Regional S.P.C.A., P.O. Box 2014, Staunton, VA 24401.
