John was a farmer for many years - first in Bloomfield, Nebraska; and later in Maysville, Arkansas.

John also "parented" his wife's two children, Elizabeth "Betty", and James "Harlin" Ascue. Betty and Harlin used the O'Donnell name as their own. Their father had been killed in a family dispute in Virginia by his brother when they were very small.
